Aurora science station shuts down

FAIRBANKS - An aurora science station outside Fairbanks has been shut down.

The HIPAS aurora science station is based in Two Rivers.

UCLA Senior Counsel Glenn Fitchman says the university is in the process of selling the HIPAS Observatory inventory. He says the observatory was mothballed when its director moved into semiretirement last year.

Fitchman says no researchers have been stationed there for a year or longer.

When the observatory was functioning, it was one of the best places to observe the aurora borealis.

UCLA has leased the site from the University of Alaska since 1986.
