Student Artist in the Spotlight: Emma Renshaw

Posted: Friday, December 15, 2006

Age: 12.

Sound off on the important issues at

School: Dzantik'i Heeni Middle school.

Art of choice: flute.

Reason: "In my old school, I played the flute in the band and wanted to continue. I went way ahead by mistake and didn't quit while ahead!"

Experience: 7 months.

Favorite artists: Bach, The Monkeys and Beach Boys. "I love oldies, classical and some Christian."

Future plans: "I will continue to play the flute. I want to be good enough to enter a teen pageant. I plan to finish high school at least, and get some jobs."

Other activities: She also does ballet and swimming, and is in home school.

Wacky art: "Probably do the wrong song, in Hollywood! Embarrassing!"

You should know: She started to cook when she was 5, and she knows how to crochet. "My cat comes to a certain sound I can make: 'Pddrrrow!'"

Her teacher, Karen Rigdon, says: "Emma is a real go-getter. She practices her flute lessons until she perfects each piece and then works ahead in her book. She exceeds the required practice time by many hours. Emma has an ear for music. Recently she gave me a copy of her hand written staff and musical notation for 'Happy Birthday' that she had figured out, on her own, by ear."
