ANCHORAGE - Kodiak's Trevor Dunbar finished second at the high school cross country national championship race in San Diego.

The only runner ahead of Dunbar was Solomon Haile, who is from Ethiopia - famous for its distance runners. Haile won the five-kilometer race seven seconds ahead of Dunbar.

Dunbar was one of 40 runners on Saturday. The field was composed of the top 10 finishers from four regional meets held last weekend.

The senior at Kodiak High says he went into the race without a game plan, except for trying to stay up with the leaders.

Dunbar's dad is his coach. Marcus Dunbar won the national indoor mile championship in 1994.
