Dec. 17

• Holiday Ice Extravaganza - The Juneau Skating Club will host an hour-long performance beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Treadwell Arena, highlighting JUneau's figure skaters and coaches. A Dessert Auction will kick off the event. Additional information is available at or at the rink. Questions can be directed to JSC coaches at, or 523-9115.

• Juneau Jumpers Holiday Show - 7 p.m. at Glacier Valley High School, $5 per person, $3 per person with two cans of food for the Food Bank, $10 per family, $8 for a family with two cans of food. Special appearance by the Auke Bay Ropers jumprope team.

Dec. 27-30

19th Annual Capital City Basketball Tournament - Teams from East Anchorage, Palmer, Service and Wrangell participating, along with the Crimson Bears in the JDHS main gym. Games begin at 2 p.m. Dec. 27. Passes are available at the JDHS activities office, six sessions for $30. Contact 523-1607/1616 for more information.

Jan. 1

SERR New Year's Day Race - 10 a.m., parking garage under Douglas library. This is a 4-mile, open fun run.

• Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School is looking for volunteers to help with scoring and time keeping this weekend for the Hooptime/Rebounders' Middle School Basketball Tournament at Floyd Dryden and Dzantik'i Heeni. The tournament runs Dec. 10-12, and will include boys' and girls' teams from Juneau and five other communities in the Southeast. Contact Molly Hillis at 463-1899 ext. 229 to volunteer.

• 2010 Co-ed volleyball sign-ups - Adult co-ed volleyball team registration packets are available at the Parks & Rec office, located on the second floor of the municipal building, room 218. Team registration will be conducted Thursday, Jan. 7 at 5 p.m. in teh Assembly Chambers, located on the main floor of the Municipal Building, 155 S. Seward. Late registration will be taken Friday, Jan. 8 at the Parks & Rec office for a $20 late fee. More information is available at

• 17th Annual Holiday Cup - The Holiday Cup Competitive Indoor Soccer Tournament will be held Dec. 19-31, with six coed divisions: Elementary grades 4-5 (minimum age 9); middle school grades 6-8; junior high grades 9 through age 16; Senior Division ages 17-20; Masters Division ages 21-39; Classic Division ages 40 and over.

Coaches and managers interested in sponsoring a team must submit a roster by 5 p.m. on Dec. 4, dropped off at the Law Offices of Dillon & Findley at 350 N. Franklin St.

• Interested in earning a day pass or lesson up at Eaglecrest? The ORCA Ski/Snowboard program is looking for ski and snowboard volunteers this winter. We are up at Eaglecrest every weekend, January through March, and provide adaptive ski/snowboard lessons to individuals who experience disabilities. Benefits include lessons and training regarding adaptive gear for skiing/snowboarding, a day pass or lesson earned for each day volunteered, and the opportunity to meet new people. • Hooptime Basketball registration is ongoing for players in grades 4-8. The season begins Jan. 4, and registration is on a first-come-first-served basis. • TMHS Cheerleader Babysitting Club - The Thunder Mountain cheerleaders are offering a babysitting service throughout the school year. Red Cross/CPR-trained cheerleaders will work for you in pairs for your babysitting needs. Please call coach Julie Wyatt at 957-0380 for details and to schedule your babysitters.

• Mt. Jumbo Gym Preschool Open Gym - Preschool open gym runs through April, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, in Douglas. Youths ages 1-6 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at a maximum ratio of 4:1. Play equipment, tumbling mats, tricycles, scooters and more are available. Please bring clean, dry shoes and a snack. There is a $1 fee per child, though adults are free with a paid child. Punch cards are available for purchase at the gym.
