Former Haines Borough Assembly member and unsuccessful state Senate candidate Tim June got the most votes in the Dec. 4 balloting for a commercial flightseeing helicopter service area board.
June topped the field of nine candidates for the inaugural five-member panel with 96 votes. Highway resident Rob Pollock was a close second with 94 votes, and service area sponsor Carolyn Weishahn was third with 89 votes. The two remaining seats went to Nancy Berland and Susan Gann, who each received 84 votes.
Turnout was low in the special election, which was scheduled after borough voters outside city limits passed a citizens' initiative in October establishing a service area to regulate commercial helicopter use. Less than one-third of eligible voters - 197 of 647 - cast ballots.
