Longtime Juneau resident Betty Rose Speed died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, surrounded by family at her home. She was 85.

She was born April 1, 1922, in Bellingham, Wash., to Albert Gang and Neva Peterson.
Speed was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack P. Speed, and brother, Al Gang.
Speed is survived by her sister, Veda McClure, and her husband, Dick, of Tumwater, Wash.; daughters, Marlene Philpott and Judy Ritter of Juneau, and Carol Russell Hansen and her husband, Bill, of Big Lake; adopted daughter, Sandra Rude, and her husband, Dick, of Mount Vernon, Wash.; grandchildren, Tracey Diamond of Juneau, Donald Ritter, and his wife, René, of Big Lake, Audrey Underwood, and her husband, Tim, of Kelso, Wash., Dana Ritter of Juneau, Russell Ritter of Renton, Wash., Shane Sewell of Juneau; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A potluck and celebration of her life will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at Valley Senior Center, 9059 Atlin Ave., between the old and new Catholic churches.
