Gravel to be delivered near Mendenhall Lake

Posted: Tuesday, December 16, 2008

JUNEAU - The U.S. Forest Service is having gravel delivered to the Nugget Falls trail construction site across the frozen Mendenhall Lake shoreline, the agency said Monday. The trail will connect the visitor center to the waterfall.

Gravel will be delivered in about 10 round trips, starting today or later.

The project began last summer and is scheduled to be done by the end of the 2009 field season.

The agency has been waiting for freezing weather with low snowfall, and conditions are nearly ideal. The winter delivery was scheduled to minimize effects to vegetation, bird habitat, soil and people.
