FAIRBANKS -- At least 42 mushers have lined up to compete in the 1,000-mile 2002 Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race.
The entry deadline was Saturday at midnight. Organizers were expecting more entries that were postmarked by Saturday to arrive sometime next week.
The race is scheduled to start Feb. 9 on the Chena River in downtown Fairbanks.
If all of the entries make it to the starting line, it will be one of the largest Quest fields in history.
Rick Mackey of Nenana, who won the Quest in 1997, returned to the lineup when he registered on Friday afternoon. The only other former champion currently in the field is 1995 winner Frank Turner of Whitehorse, who is the only man to start every Quest. Turner signed up for the race on the first day of registration in July.
