Posted: Tuesday, December 17, 2002

Lynn Bennett won the Alaska State 300-yard Prone Championship for rifle shooting in a match held Nov. 17 by the Juneau Rifle and Pistol Club.

Rifle shooters braved rain, fog and a cold wind to compete in the state match and a second event on Nov. 24, a hi-power conventional and sporting rifle contest.

In the state championship, Bennett won the gold medal with a score of 555.8 from three shoots - any rifle, open sight and service rifle. Ray Coxe won the silver with 534.9.

Also competing were Mal Menzies, Dale Sams, Maureen Sams, Arn Albrecht and Scott Bosse.

The Nov. 24 event was a combined match for hi-power conventional rifles (service or match rifle, open sights) and sporting/hunting rifles (any rifle by magnums, any sight, under 9.5 pounds).

The conventional event consisted of 50 shots fired from four positions at 200 yards, with time limitations involved. Results were: Mal Menzies, 478.13 points, first master; Dale Sams, 472.7, second master; Ray Coxe, 440.3, third master; Lynn Bennett, 438.2, first marksman; Rob Janik, 348.2, second marksman.

The sporting/hunting rifle event consists of 32 shots from four positions, also with time limits. Maureen Sams finished first and Chuck Cohen second in the event.

The next JR&PC match will be held on Dec. 29.
