Matanuska winds knock our power to hundreds

Posted: Friday, December 17, 2010

ANCHORAGE - The Matanuska Electric Association says the Red Cross opened warming shelters Wednesday night at the Palmer Senior Center and Wasilla Sports Complex for residents still without power after a windstorm.

About 2,000 utility customers lost service Wednesday as winds gusted to 80 mph, and hundreds remained in the dark Wednesday night.

All of the utility's crews have been working since Tuesday night when the high winds hit.

Spokeswoman Cheryll Heinze told The Anchorage Daily News four power poles were knocked down and each one took hours to replace.
