Posted: Thursday, December 19, 2002

Thomas Angus Casey, a recent summer resident of Juneau, died Nov. 8, 2002, in a kayaking accident on Long Island Sound off the Connecticut coast. He was known locally as a runner.

Casey was born April 10, 1967, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was adopted by Mary and Thomas Ray Casey from Liverpool, N.Y.

Casey graduated in 1984 from the Taft School, where he first began running track and cross-country. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1988 with bachelor's degrees in chemical engineering and environmental studies, and he earned a master's from Penn in 1989 in appropriate technology for sustainable development.

He worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency creating mathematical models of air pollutants, helped write the standards of the Clean Water Act, and helped a newly democratic Poland create an environmental protection agency.

In 1989 he began to study for a doctorate in economics at the University of Washington, but switched to political science at Yale University. He was a resident of East Haven, Conn.

Casey completed five marathons, including one in Juneau, and he ran the 35-mile Chilkoot Trail in Skagway.

A memorial service was held in Fairfield, Conn., on Dec. 14. Donations in his name may be made to the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy by calling Wendy Ellman at (202) 974-5144.

A run in Juneau to celebrate his life is planned for sometime in mid-January. Call 789-5997 for more information.
