Juneau JV girls start the season with a win

Lexi Garvey scored 13 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, as the Juneau-Douglas High School girls junior varsity basketball team routed the Yakutat varsity 45-21 at the Mount St. Elias Classic in Yakutat.

Jordan Harvey added nine points and Kerstin Kimlinger chipped in eight as the Class 4A Crimson Bears built a 20-8 lead at halftime and never looked back. Every Juneau player scored at least two points.

Jacquoi James led the Class 2A Eagles with six points.

The Juneau JV plays Matanuska Christian, a Class 2A school, at 3:30 p.m. today. The Crimson Bears conclude tourney play against the Class 4A Palmer JV at 2 p.m. Saturday. Palmer beat Matanuska Christian 43-34 on Thursday.

The Juneau girls varsity squad opens its season one week from Saturday at the Capital City Classic.

In boys action at the Mount St. Elias Classic on Thursday, the Yakutat varsity rallied to clip the Ketchikan JV 53-52 behind 15 points from Kyle Dierick and 11 from Jack Klushkan.

Mike Jepson had 16 points to lead the Kings, who led 28-22 at the half before the Eagles came back to tie the game at 35-all after three.

In Thursday's other boys game, Anderson trounced Matanuska Christian 77-40.
