Legendary musher and Antarctic explorer Norman Vaughan, left, laughs with family Saturday in South Carolina during his 100th birthday celebration. The celebration itself was held at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. Vaughan was surrounded by his wife, Carolyn Muegge-Vaughan; his daughter, Jackie Lee, of Austin, Texas; and dozens of friends and acquaintances. He shared memories with family and friends in South Carolina, Colorado and Massachusetts via video teleconference. Vaughan blew out the 100 candles on his birthday cake with a little help, ate a few oysters and took his first-ever sip of champagne.
