City Museum to host presentation on China Joe
JUNEAU - The Juneau-Douglas City Museum will host a presentation by Mark Whitman on the life of China Joe, who had the first bakery in Juneau during the Gold Rush and after, at 10 a.m. on Feb. 2.
Joe is famed for his generosity. He gave credit to starving gold miners and Tlingit workers who were waiting for work during a cold winter when flour supplies didn't get in. In addition, he gave free coffee and snacks to the firefighters and children.
The museum, with Community Schools, have written to organizations in Juneau to hold a fundraiser in China Joe's name for the Southeast Alaska Foodbank before Feb. 2 and present the check at the event on Feb. 2. Tea and Chinese pastries will be provided at the reception. The public is welcome to bring favorite tea or pastries.
