Thanks for helping with decathlon

Posted: Sunday, December 19, 2010

Congratulations to the students who competed during the 2010 Southeast Regional Academic Decathlon Tournament held at Juneau-Douglas High School.

Academic Decathlon is a competition involving ten events: art, language and literature, math, science, music, economics, social studies, essay writing, speech and interview and an annually changing thematic focus. This year, the students are studying everything related to the Great Depression and focusing on geology for the Superquiz.

The following students placed: Erin Bookless (third place, math), Maureen Caparas (third place, music), Nicole George (second place, interview), Rabina Maskay (third place, math and economics), Adam Soto (third place, essay), Erik Stromme (third place, math and social studies, second place, language and literature and fine arts), Stephanie Tripp (third place, essay, second place, math, first place, music and interview) and Jamelyn Zeller (second place, essay).

Thank you to the parents and community members who helped judge the speech and interview sections of the competition: Pat Moore, Doreen Shaw, Laury Scandling, Carole Bookless, Dixie and Bob Weiss, Brita Steinberger, Gwen George, Jennifer Thompson, Lyndsey Zeller, Matthew and Sharon Fishel, Janette Gagnon, Liz Agnew, Joe Nelson, Melchie Cabrigas, Joyce Vic, Chris Reid and Arlene and Jack Tripp. This tournament does not happen without the full support of our activities director Sandi Wagner, activities assistant Cricket Curtain, principal Ryan Alsup and our most helpful essay grader this year who spent an evening grading essays on Steinbeck and geology. The students appreciate your time and feedback.

And finally, many thanks for the generosity and hospitality shown by the families who housed our visiting students from all over Southeast. The students went home feeling positive about their visit to our town and their tournament experience was enhanced by having a home away from home to go to at the end of grueling testing days. Special thanks to Joe Nelson for being an exceptional host, Jane Ginter for being our all around assistant in running the tournament and Patty Gerdes for helping our students prepare for the meet.
