Friday, Dec. 21

Juneau-Douglas High School boys basketball -- The annual Red-Black intrasquad game takes place at 7 p.m. at the JDHS main gym.

Saturday, Dec. 22

Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Saturday hike -- This week's ski/snowshoe trek is in the Dredge Lake area and along the East Mendenhall Lake shoreline. Meet at 10 a.m. at the trailhead near Mendenhall River Bridge (across from Mendenhall River School) for this easy 2-4 mile trip. Bring cross-country skis or snowshoes, wear warm layers of clothing, and bring plenty of food and water. No dogs or firearms allowed. Info: Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation, 586-5226.

Monday, Dec. 24

Eaglecrest Ski Area Christmas Eve Celebration -- Events start at 3:30 p.m., with torchlight parade on Hooter at 5:30 p.m. (register by 1 p.m.) and a kids' torchlight parade on Platter Lift at 6 p.m. Other events include ornament decorating for kids, snacks, music and a visit from Santa Claus. The ski area opens at 10 a.m. on Christmas Day. Info: Eaglecrest Ski Area, 790-2000.

Wednesday, Dec. 26

Juneau Alpine Club -- Gastineau Moonlight Climb, starts at 5 p.m. at location TBA, this is a medium energy output level hike lasting three or four hours. Required technical gear includes snowshoes and a head lamp. Info: Trip leader Bill Forrest, 789-3008.

Thursday, Dec. 27

Juneau-Douglas High School girls basketball -- Princess-Capital City Classic: North Kitsap (Poulsbo, Wash.) plays Wasilla at 1 p.m. and the Crimson Bears host Mills (Millbrae, Calif.) at 6 p.m. at the JDHS main gym. Tournament passes available for $20 at both locations of Hearthside Books.

Meetings / Clinics / Announcements

Southeast Road Runners club Ben Blackgoat scholarship -- Applications are available at the Juneau-Douglas High School career center for JDHS senior cross country and/or track and field athletes. The seniors need to write an essay expressing their feelings about running and its impact on their lives. Applications are due by Friday, Dec. 21. The winner receives a $500 scholarship for post-secondary education purposes. Info: Barb Conant, JDHS career center, 463-1900.

Southeast Alaska Avalanche Center workshops -- Avalanche workshops will take place in Juneau, Petersburg, Haines and Ketchikan. An avalanche awareness class takes place in Juneau at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, at McPhetres Hall, at 4th and Gold, with a fee of $5 ($3 for students). Level I backcountry courses are Dec. 26-29 and March 1-4 in Juneau and March 15-18 in Haines, with the three-day intensive Level I classes costing $295 ($220 students/low income). A Level II backcountry course is Jan. 25-28 in Juneau and costs $325 ($250 students/low income). Courses for all snow travelers, including snowmachiners, lasting 1 1/2 days take place in Juneau on Jan. 4-6, in Petersburg on Jan. 31-Feb. 3 and in Ketchikan on a date TBA. Open Gyms / Scrimmages / Ongoing

Adult badminton open gym -- Meet from 8-10 p.m. every Monday and Thursday at Auke Bay Elementary School. Teenagers and adults encouraged to attend. All skill levels welcome. Bring a racket if you have one. Shuttlecocks provided. Gym fee is $3. Info: Info: Theresa Walden, 790-2499.

Juneau 4-H Nordic Ski program -- The club skis from 1:30-3 p.m. every Sunday starting on Jan. 6. Membership is $6 to join 4-H, plus club ski rental is $20 for the season. Students renting skis are expected to attend at least 80 percent of the club ski outings. Parents are encouraged to participate, but they must provide their own skis.
