Eaglecrest Ski Area Snowflake Festival - Eaglecrest's annual Snowflake Festival is scheduled to run from Dec. 18 to Jan. 2, depending on snow conditions. The festival is set to kick off on Dec. 18 at 3:30 p.m. with an outdoor tree lighting ceremony in front of the lodge. On Dec. 24, the Christmas Eve celebration starts at 3:30 p.m. and will include ornament decorating, holiday music, the traditional torchlight parade at 5:30 p.m., a kids' torchlight parade at 6 p.m. and the arrival of Santa at 6:15 p.m. On New Year's Day there will be live music and fireworks, and at 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 2 there will be a drawing for a trip for two to Alyeska Ski Resort - enter each time you visit. U.S. Telemark Ski Team member Matt Beedle of Juneau will offer an all-day World Cup Telemark skiing clinic on Jan. 2, and there will be two ski and snowboard holiday camp sessions - Dec. 20-24 and Dec. 27-31. Juneau Parks and Recreation - 2005 coed volleyball registration: Team registration will take place on Thursday, Jan. 6 at 5 p.m. in the Assembly chambers at Juneau City Hall. Late registration - with a $10 late fee - will take place on Friday, Jan. 7 at the Parks and Rec office at city hall. Capital City Soccer League - women's classic indoor soccer registration - Registration for the CCSL's women's classic indoor soccer league continues until Jan. 8, with games starting on Jan. 11. There is no experience necessary, and older women and new players are encouraged to participate. Teams play one game each week, at 6 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays at Mount Jumbo Gym. Mount Jumbo preschool open gym - Preschool open gyms for children ages 1-6 and an adult parent or caregiver take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through April. There must be at least one adult present for every four kids. There is a $1 per child fee, or punchcards for $10 and $50 can be bought at the gym, which is located at 909 4th Street in Douglas. Tricycles, mats, balls, a Little Tykes climber, building blocks and a kid-sized basketball hoop are available. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - New climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Juneau Community Schools open gyms - Basketball, volleyball and soccer open gyms for adults are available several times a week. Basketball and volleyball open gyms are held Fridays and Sundays from 7-9 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Soccer open gyms are held Saturdays from 6-8 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School and Sundays from 6:45-8:45 p.m. at Floyd Dryden Middle School. Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Recreational badminton - Auke Bay group: This group meets from 8-10 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays at the Auke Bay Community School gym. **SCHEDULE REVISION: The badminton group will not meet over the school's winter break, from Dec. 19 through Jan. 2. After the break, the group will meet just once a week, on Tuesdays, with the first session on Jan. 4. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
