Be careful about unfounded accusations

Letter to the editor

I am sorry that Mr. Swanston has seen recruitment literature defaced and destroyed (Dec. 14, Juneau Empire). I, too, believe in free speech and am ever grateful for those who work to protect our civil liberties and to defend the Bill of Rights.

Sound off on the important issues at

Mr. Swanston may be interested to know that Veterans for Peace materials have also been defaced and even removed from public places. Just as Veterans for Peace does not know who has destroyed its materials, I suspect Mr. Swanston has no firsthand knowledge of parties responsible for destruction of recruitment materials. Destruction of property is certainly not condoned by Veterans for Peace, and I would assume that destruction of Veterans for Peace materials is not countenanced by the military.

Let's be careful about unfounded accusations and try to be tender with each other as we, all Americans, struggle to discern how best to serve our ideals, our country and our world.
