ANGOON - The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium Emergency Medical Services department will offer an Emergency Trauma Technician course that also includes a recertification Emergency Medical Technician 1 curriculum this February in Angoon.
The 44-hour course runs from 8 a.m. to noon, 1-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. (three required sessions each day) from Feb. 21 to Feb. 24, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Feb. 25 at the Angoon fire hall.
The ETT part of the class is for those people wanting to earn their first ETT certification and those who need to recertify their existing ETT card. The EMT 1 recertification part of the class is for people who already hold a current EMT 1 certification from the State of Alaska that is about to expire or recently expired. Students planning to take the ETT and EMT 1 recertification classes should plan on attending for the full time so they can earn additional continuing education hours.
The course fee is $75 per person, payable to SEARHC EMS. Interested individuals who may not be able to afford the class should go ahead and attend the class, and SEARHC EMS will look for alternative funding to help them pay for the course.
A cardiopulmonary resuscitation recertification class also will be offered as needed in the evenings after the ETT/EMT class. The CPR course is open to all Angoon residents who need to recertify their CPR cards at no charge (this course is only for recertification, not new students).
The main purpose of these courses are to provide a local recertification opportunity for Angoon ETTs/EMT 1s, provide an ETT course for new Angoon EMS recruits, promote a working dialog between EMS responders and medical staff at the SEARHC Jessie Norma Jim Health Center, and provide time for Angoon community members to renew their CPR cards.
