Ski report

Posted: Sunday, December 21, 2003

Saturday midday, there was 28 inches of snow at the Eaglecrest Ski Area lodge, and about 72 inches on top. It's a heavy wet snow. The groomed runs are soft snow turning, the ski area said. Fat skis and snowboards work best off the groomed.

Runs groomed Saturday were Easy Bowl, Williwaw, Cheechako, Mother Lode, Sluice Box, half of Ego, Logjam, Raven Runout, Trickster, Sneaky, Muskeg and Dolly Varden.

Nordic skiing on the mountain: Upper and lower cross-country trails were trackset Saturday.

The Juneau Nordic Ski Club's Web site at home.gci.net/~jnordski/ reported these trail conditions on Saturday: The Mendenhall Campground was groomed Friday for classic and skating, and will probably soften up Saturday evening.

Parking on Skater's Cabin Road is allowed only on the west side beginning with the intersection of the entrance road to Mendenhall Campground all the way to the West Glacier Trailhead Parking Lot. There is usually plenty of parking at West Glacier for folks with 4wd vehicles and it is easy to access the groomed tracks from there.

By Saturday, Mendenhall Lake had turned to slush.

At Dredge Lakes there was slush on the Moose Lake trail beaver pond and Moraine Lake and the club will need a good freeze and snow before setting the north end of the Dredge Lake unit.
