NEW CALENDAR ITEM

• Eaglecrest Ski Area nordic ski lessons - Nordic ski lessons are available through the Eaglecrest Ski and Snowboard School. A 2-hour learn-to-classic-ski lesson or a learn-to-skate-ski lesson costs $17 each, while 2-hour intermediate and advanced clinics cost $20. Learn-to-Telemark-ski lessons are $17 and include and all-day surface lift ticket, while 2-hour intermediate and advanced classes cost $20. During the month of February, the Telemark series takes place from 1-4 p.m. on Sundays and costs $30 or $48 with a lift ticket. Info: Eaglecrest Ski and Snowboard School, 790-2001.

• Arctic Winter Games Team Alaska snowshoeing tryouts - Time trials for runners/snowshoers born in 1984 or later will take place on Friday, Dec. 19, and Tuesday, Dec. 23, at the Mendenhall Campground near Skater's Cabin. Friday's tryout is at 3 p.m. and Tuesday's is at 10:30 a.m. Each participant will complete a 2-mile and a 400-meter course for time, and the times will be compared statewide to determine the team. The 2004 Arctic Winter Games take place Feb. 28 through March 6 in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The cost per athlete is $555 (includes airfare, room and board and uniforms), plus a $70 coaching fee. • Holiday Cup 2003 indoor soccer tournament - The annual indoor soccer tournament takes place Dec. 20-31, with five coed divisions - Elementary (grades 4-5), Middle School (grades 6-8), Junior (high school, ages 16-younger), Senior (high school-college, ages 17-21) and Masters (ages 22-222). Team rosters were due by Monday, Dec. 1. Electronic versions of the registration packet are available. • Eaglecrest Ski Area Snowflake Festival - Events run Dec. 20 though Jan. 4, and participants age 19-older can enter to win a ski package for two to Alyeska Resort, a round-trip ticket for two on Wings of Alaska or a five-day booklet of lift tickets. Entry forms are available at the Eaglecrest rental/repair shop and the winner will be announced at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 4. The Christmas tree lighting is at 4 p.m. on Dec. 20 at the day lodge; there are holiday ski/snowboard camps for all ages on Dec. 22, 23, 24 and 26; there are Christmas Eve festivities starting at 2 p.m. on Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve events include a candy cane race and snow painting at 2 p.m., ornament decorating at 3:30 p.m., holiday music at 4:30 p.m., an adult torchlight parade at 5:30 p.m. and a children's torchlight parade at 6 p.m. and Santa arrives at 6:15 p.m. Register for torchlight parades by 1 p.m. at the ski school, 790-2001. • Hilary Lindh Eaglecrest Ski Area Season Pass Scholarship - Applications are being accepted for this year's scholarships, which go to a boy and a girl in grades K-12. The scholarship was established in 1992 after Juneau's Hilary Lindh won an Olympic silver medal in the downhill and serves as a way to help younger Juneau skiers develop their talent. Applications are available at all Juneau schools, at Eaglecrest's downtown office and at the ski area, Foggy Mountain Shoppe and Nugget Alaskan Outfitter. Completed applications are due by 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, at the Eaglecrest business office in the downtown municipal building. Winners will be announced on Sunday, Jan. 4. OPEN GYMS / SCRIMMAGES / ONGOING

• Youth open gyms - Meet from 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Youth open gyms are free for students in grades 5-12. Info: Community schools director Joyce Kitka, 463-1700, Ext. 327.

• Adult volleyball/basketball open gyms - Meet from 7-9 p.m. on Fridays and from 7-9 p.m. on Sundays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Cost is $4 and open gym is limited to adults (age 18-older) only. Info: Community Schools, 463-1700, Ext. 325.

• Mount Jumbo Gym preschool open gym - This Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation program is open from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 909 Fourth Street in Douglas for children ages 1-6 and their parents or caregivers. A ratio of four children to one adult must be met. Balls, mats, trikes, scooters, large building blocks, parachutes and a Little Tykes climber system will be available for use. • Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 3-7 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and 3-9 p.m. on Fridays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. • Treadwell Arena programs - The ice arena is open seven days a week with a variety of public open skates, youth open skates, pond hockey and rental times available (see Treadwell Arena Web site for details). The rink is closed for ice maintenance from 7:45-10:45 a.m. on Mondays and from 7:45 a.m. to noon on Fridays. Fees for open skates are $4 adults, $3 youths (age 17-younger) and $2 seniors (age 65-older). Fees for pond hockey are $5 adults, $4 youths and $3 seniors. Skate rental is $2 for adults and youths, and $1.90 for seniors. Passes are available for open skates, pond hockey and skate rental. Facility rental is $150 an hour. • Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
