Senior guard plays for love of the game

For Thunder Mountain senior guard Reese Saviers, basketball is a way of life here in Alaska's capital city.

Saviers, one of four brothers, grew up around the sport that many in his family loved as well, including his cousin, current Thunder Mountain girls' basketball coach Tanya Nizich.

"I grew up watching her play basketball and my dad played," he said. "My whole family has been involved in sports for a long time."

Saviers said while he only plays basketball now, he grew up playing many sports such as soccer and baseball.

Saviers grew up in Juneau with his three brothers. His parents grew up in this city as well.

After his senior year, Saviers said he plans to go to school in San Diego, eventually at San Diego State University.

"I want to play ball in college, so it does depend what colleges are looking at me as to where I want to go."

Outside of sports, he said he is interested in two different fields of study.

"Either engineering or dentistry, but I haven't decided which one yet," he said. "I was an intern for the engineering department for the state of Alaska and I liked what they did. And my cousin is a dentist and ever since I was a little kid I've wanted to be one."

Favorite sport to watch: "I like to watch basketball and football on TV."

Favorite football team: "My dad and I have been (Oakland) Raiders fans our whole lives."

When asked about the team's rare victory on Sunday: "My dad was all excited."

NCAA or NBA: "I used to be an NBA guy but now I like college basketball more. I've been a Duke fan for a long time; I love watching them play."

Favorite basketball movie: "Coach Carter, I like that movie."

Hobbies: "I hang out with my friends and I lift weights after school every day. I used to ski but when I was on the JDHS basketball team, they didn't let us go to Eaglecrest so I stopped when I was a freshman."

Favorite basketball player: LeBron James.

Something he looks forward to this year: "I want to hang the Southeast banner up in Thunder Mountain gym."
