Free books at airport mall

The Friends of the Juneau Public Library Amazing Bookstore are giving away books in front of the Village Barber Shop in the Airport Shopping Center. The tables will be replenished throughout the holidays.

Raffle for house underway

Alpine Alternatives Fifth Annual Homes Raffle has begun. Prize drawing will be held March 18, 2001. The winner of the yearly fund raiser wins a new home, while nine others share thousands of dollars in cash and prizes. Three thousand tickets will be sold at $100 each; a book of ten tickets costs $800. The home, now under construction, is located in the Ridgemont Subdivision in Anchorage. It features three bedrooms, two baths and a double car garage.

Scholarships offered

The National Alliance for Excellence's applications are available for the 2000-2001 Lucent Global Science Scholars Program, an international competition to identify and assist future leaders in the field of communication. The program is open to high school seniors planning careers in information technologies who will attend college in the fall of 2001.

Applications may be postmarked no later than Jan. 20, 2001. One hundred finalists will be announced on March 5, and 50 winners will be announced April 23. Winners will receive $5,000 scholarships and have the opportunity to attend a Global Summit at Lucent Technologies' corporate headquarters in New Jersey.
