Downtown ready for customers

Posted: Sunday, December 22, 2002

'Tis the Saturday before Christmas - and I counted 48 locally owned stores downtown selling a wide variety of holiday gift items.

All were located between the tram and Second Street.

There were about a half-dozen people walking on sidewalks, and plenty of available parking.

This seems to belie several erroneous perceptions of downtown, and explain why each year more downtown businesses find they cannot afford to be open in the winter.

Happy holidays to all.
