Governor should resign

Posted: Sunday, December 22, 2002

Gov. Frank Murkowski said it would be a difficult decision and yet most of us knew it was coming.

His decision to appoint a family member to his own vacated Senate seat is a decision that disrespects the democratic process and redefines political nepotism. If state Rep. Lisa Murkowski wanted to be our Alaska senator, she should have tried the old-fashioned way.

It is the greatest abuse of power for the governor to have made this decision through a law tailored expressly for his own use in this circumstance.

Had these political maneuverings been played by a Democrat I am confident Gov. Murkowski would have led the pack in crying foul. This country was not founded upon the lenses of partisanship.

In letters to the former senator I, like all Alaskans, addressed him as the

Honorable Frank Murkowski.

I call on Gov. Murkowski to do what is honorable. He should resign the governor's office immediately.
