Arctic Winter Games Team Alaska snowshoeing tryouts - Time trials for runners/snowshoers born in 1984 or later will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the Mendenhall Campground near Skater's Cabin. Each participant will complete a 2-mile and a 400-meter course for time, and the times will be compared statewide to determine the team. The 2004 Arctic Winter Games take place Feb. 28 through March 6 in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The cost per athlete is $555 (includes airfare, room and board and uniforms), plus a $70 coaching fee. Holiday Cup 2003 indoor soccer tournament - The annual indoor soccer tournament takes place Dec. 20-31, with five coed divisions - Elementary (grades 4-5), Middle School (grades 6-8), Junior (high school, ages 16-younger), Senior (high school-college, ages 17-21) and Masters (ages 22-222). Team rosters were due by Monday, Dec. 1. Electronic versions of the registration packet are available. Eaglecrest Ski Area Snowflake Festival - Events run Dec. 20 though Jan. 4, and participants age 19-older can enter to win a ski package for two to Alyeska Resort, a round-trip ticket for two on Wings of Alaska or a five-day booklet of lift tickets. Entry forms are available at the Eaglecrest rental/repair shop and the winner will be announced at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 4. The Christmas tree lighting is at 4 p.m. on Dec. 20 at the day lodge; there are holiday ski/snowboard camps for all ages on Dec. 22, 23, 24 and 26; and there are Christmas Eve festivities starting at 2 p.m. on Dec. 24. Christmas Eve events include a candy cane race and snow painting at 2 p.m., ornament decorating at 3:30 p.m., holiday music at 4:30 p.m., an adult torchlight parade at 5:30 p.m. and a children's torchlight parade at 6 p.m. and Santa arrives at 6:15 p.m. Register for torchlight parades by 1 p.m. at the ski school, 790-2001. Hilary Lindh Eaglecrest Ski Area Season Pass Scholarship - Applications are being accepted for this year's scholarships, which go to a boy and a girl in grades K-12. The scholarship was established in 1992 after Juneau's Hilary Lindh won an Olympic silver medal in the downhill and serves as a way to help younger Juneau skiers develop their talent. Applications are available at all Juneau schools, at Eaglecrest's downtown office and at the ski area, Foggy Mountain Shoppe and Nugget Alaskan Outfitter. Completed applications are due by 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, at the Eaglecrest business office in the downtown municipal building. Winners will be announced on Sunday, Jan. 4. Juneau Adult Hockey Association women's hockey registration - The last day to register for the winter season is Jan. 5, 2004. The winter season starts Jan. 12 and teams play one game a week through mid-April at Treadwell Arena. The registration fee is $125 (players new to JAHA) and $85 (players who competed in the fall 2003 season). The league is limited to 90 women, no late registration. Spots also are open in the coed leagues, which are open to all players age 18-older. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation 2004 coed volleyball registration - Team manager packets are available at the Parks and Rec office, Room 218 of the municipal building downtown (155 South Seward Street). Team registration takes place at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8, in Assembly Chambers at the municipal building. Late registration takes place on Friday, Jan. 9, at the Parks and Rec office ($10 late fee charged). Teams will be accepted on a space-available basis only. Waterfowl hunter reports sought - The Alaska Department of Fish and Game reminds all waterfowl hunters to drop off or mail in their Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge permit reports to the Douglas ADF&G office. Women's classic indoor soccer registration - Registration for the upcoming women's classic indoor soccer season is open until Jan. 9. The season begins on Jan. 12. Teams play once a week on Mondays; no experience necessary, older women and new players are welcomed and encouraged. Water safety instructor aide course - This class takes place from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays from Jan. 10 through Feb. 21. The course is designed for mature swimmers age 10 and older who have completed at least Level IV of the American Red Cross' Learn to Swim Program. Arctic Winter Games Team Alaska volleyball tryouts - Tryouts have been announced for the Team Alaska squads in volleyball for the Arctic Winter Games that take place Feb. 28 through March 6, 2004, in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Bryan Stenehjem of Anchorage's Dimond High School team will coordinate the two Alaska teams (10 players each born in 1984 or later), while Juneau's Phil McMurray will coach the boys and Liz Hooe of Anchorage will coach the girls. HoopTime Basketball registration: HoopTime Basketball, a non-profit AAU-sanctioned club, is accepting registrations for the 2004 season for boys and girls in grades 4-8. Juneau Golf Club's Alaskan Open 2004 - Registration is due by Jan. 15, 2004, at the Juneau Golf Club for this annual event that takes place March 1-5 in Casa Grande, Ariz. No late registration will be accepted, except to fill last-minute cancelations. The week's events include a four-person team best-ball tournament, a one-putt competition, golf clinics and group dinners. The tournament fee is $125, not including 2004 Juneau Golf Club dues of $20 and 2004 USGA handicap fee of $15. Optional memberships in the Juneau Junior Golf CLub are available at $25. Mount Jumbo Gym preschool open gym - This Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation program is open from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 909 Fourth Street in Douglas for children ages 1-6 and their parents or caregivers. A ratio of four children to one adult must be met. Balls, mats, trikes, scooters, large building blocks, parachutes and a Little Tykes climber system will be available for use. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 3-7 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and 3-9 p.m. on Fridays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Treadwell Arena programs - The ice arena is open seven days a week with a variety of public open skates, youth open skates, pond hockey and rental times available (see Treadwell Arena Web site for details). The rink is closed for ice maintenance from 7:45-10:45 a.m. on Mondays and from 7:45 a.m. to noon on Fridays. Fees for open skates are $4 adults, $3 youths (age 17-younger) and $2 seniors (age 65-older). Fees for pond hockey are $5 adults, $4 youths and $3 seniors. Skate rental is $2 for adults and youths, and $1.90 for seniors. Passes are available for open skates, pond hockey and skate rental. Facility rental is $150 an hour. Juneau 4-H Cross-Country Ski Club - The first Juneau 4-H Cross-Country Ski Club ski session takes place on Jan. 4, 2004, with regular ski sessions from 1-3 p.m. on Sundays through March 7, 2004, at various locations around Juneau. The club is run by Odin Brudie and Frankie Pillifant and is open for students in grades K-12, but parents are encouraged to ski with their children. Ski equipment is available for rent, but people renting equipment must participate in most of the club's events. A 4-H membership fee of $6 (good all year for all 4-H clubs) will be charged, and ski equipment can be rented for the season for $50 (with $20 refunded if you participate in seven 4-H ski days, scholarships available based on need). Eaglecrest Ski Area nordic ski lessons - Nordic ski lessons are available through the Eaglecrest Ski and Snowboard School. A 2-hour learn-to-classic-ski lesson or a learn-to-skate-ski lesson costs $17 each, while 2-hour intermediate and advanced clinics cost $20. Learn-to-Telemark-ski lessons are $17 and include and all-day surface lift ticket, while 2-hour intermediate and advanced classes cost $20. Open badminton gyms - Meet from 8-10 p.m. on Mondays and 7-10 p.m. on Thursdays at the Auke Bay Elementary School gym, or from 7- 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Gastineau Elementary School gym in Douglas.
