Special holiday music on public television

Alaska's public television stations and the Alaska Rural Communications Service will air a special holiday music program from the governor's residence in Juneau.

"An Alaskan Christmas," featuring performances by three groups of Alaska musicians, will air on KTOO-TV, Juneau; KYUK-TV, Bethel; KUAC-TV, Fairbanks; and KAKM-TV, Anchorage, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 23. The program will also air on ARCS and KAKM-TV at 9 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

Produced by KTOO in Juneau, the half-hour program features performances by the Alaska Youth Choir, The Panhandle Crabgrass Revival Band and The Juneau Brass Quartet.

In addition, the program will look at the history of the Alaska governor's house, as well as this year's holiday decorations.

City museum displaying architects' portfolios

Through January 8, the Juneau-Douglas City Museum will display the portfolios from the eight lead designers that were selected to proceed to the next stage of the Capitol Design Competition.

The City Museum is at 4th and Main streets and is a program of the Juneau Parks and Recreation Department. Winter hours are noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. December winter admission is free, thanks to Harold O. Fossum. The museum will be closed Friday and Saturday, Dec. 24 and 25, and Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Indoor shooting range is open

The Alaska Department of Fish & Game Juneau Hunter Education Indoor Shooting Range is open and offers 50-foot live-fire range with seven shooting lanes; modern bullet-trap system (for .22 rifles and handguns up to .45 caliber); state-of-the-art air-handling system for a safe, clean environment; hunter education and bowhunter education classes; firearms instruction for all skill levels; instructor and range safety officer certification; youth shooting sports and clinics; marksmanship qualification; league shooting; competitive shoots and tournaments; targets and other shooting accessories for sale and rent; friendly and knowledgeable staff, instructors and volunteers; warm, safe, friendly atmosphere for everyone.

Walk-in public shooting hours: public shooting hours at the range will close over the Christmas and New Year holidays from Dec. 23 through Jan. 1. Walk-in public shooting hours will open after the holidays at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 2. Phone the range information line at 586-4101 for current hours and notice of special events and closures. Tuesday: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.; Wednesday: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.; Saturday: 1:30 to 7:30 p.m.; Sunday: 1:30 to 7:30 p.m. Closed: Dec. 23 through Jan. 1.
