ANCHORAGE - A former deputy Anchorage police chief is the new head of the department.

Anchorage television station KTUU reported Mayor Dan Sullivan announced the hiring of Mark Mew during a Monday afternoon news conference.

Mew is a former deputy chief for the Anchorage Police Department and current deputy director of security with the Anchorage School District.

He replaces Rob Heun, who was nominated earlier this year to be the next U.S. Marshal for Alaska.

Sullivan chose Mew over two other finalists, acting Chief Steven Smith and Michael Denney, the assistant chief in Mesa, Ariz.
