KTOO to air 'An Alaskan Christmas' music program

JUNEAU - KTOO-TV will air "An Alaskan Christmas," a special holiday music program filmed at the Governor's House, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23.

Produced in Juneau, the 30-minute program includes performances by Panhandle Crabgrass Revival Band, the Alaska Youth Choir and The Juneau Brass Quartet. The program also explores the history of the Governor's House.

The show will also air on KYUK-TV, Bethel; KUAC-TV, Fairbanks and KAKM-TV, Anchorage, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, and on ARCS and KAKM-TV at 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 24.

"An Alaskan Christmas" was recorded in front of an audience of families and friends of the Alaska National Guard troops deployed to Iraq.

Variety show set for Christmas Eve at VFW Hall

JUNEAU - Members of the Hispanic and Filipino communities are teaming to host a variety show and dinner from 6 p.m.-2 a.m. Friday, Dec. 24, at the ANB Hall on Willoughby Avenue.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children and $30 for families.

Dinner runs from 6 to 7 p.m. and includes turkey enchiladas. The rest of the night will include Mexican dancing, hiphop dancing, song, raffles, games and a large backdrop with the northern lights.

"The idea is to get together different cultures and different customs from the Philippine people and the Hispanic people," said Alejandro Soria, one of the event organizers. "People can participate, doing something or showing something. We are still open if anybody wants to brings something to the show."

Santa returns for Eaglecrest Christmas Eve party

JUNEAU - Santa Claus will make a special appearance at the Eaglecrest Ski Area during its annual Christmas Eve Celebration, 3:30-6:10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 24. The event will take place even if Eaglecrest is not open for the season.

The entertainment includes:

• 3:30 p.m. - Ornament making for kids upstairs in the Day Lodge

• 4 - Snacks

• 4:30 - Holiday concert with Rick Trostel's Thrushhill Music students; sing-a-long with Ann Boochever

• 5:30 - Torchlight Parade on Sourdough Hill

• 6 - Kids' Torchlight on the Platter

• 6:10 - Santa arrives

What Remains, Old Goat headline punk show at VFW Hall

JUNEAU - What Remains and Old Goat will headline a five-band all-ages punk bill at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at the VFW Hall.

Angry, Angry Death Slug, The Shoe Whores and A.D.P. will also play. Admission is $3 or three cans of food.

Salsa Borealis to play New Year's Eve at VFW Hall

JUNEAU -A few weeks after their successful all-ages dance at the VFW Hall on Gallery Walk Night, Salsa Borealis is organizing another all-ages dance, 8 p.m.-1 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31 (New Year's Eve) at the VFW Hall.

Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for students and free for kids under 10.

The evening will include sets by Salsa Borealis, DJ music, dance performances, party favors, snacks and a sparkling cider toast at midnight.

Northern Light to host musical Christmas Eve programs

JUNEAU - Northern Light United Church, at the corner of 11th and A streets, will host two musical services on Christmas Eve, Friday, Dec. 24.

The first, at 6:30 p.m., includes candelight songs, carols and a story for children. The music will be led by Song for the Journey.

The second, at 9 p.m., features the Tlingit Gospel Singers and a musical setting of "The Christmas Story," with narration by Renee Guerin. The service also includes candles, carols and "Wrapped in Plain Paper," by Pastor Donna Alora.

William Todd Hunt will be guest conductor, and J. Allan MacKinnon is the director of music.
