Esther Sylvia Kanan
Juneau resident Esther "Dolly" Sylvia Kanan, 96, died Dec. 19, 2000, in Juneau.
She was born Jan. 1, 1914, in Calumet, Mich., the youngest (and last surviving) of 12 children born to Alfred and Anna (Oikarinen) Frantti of Finland.
She enjoyed cooking and ice skating. She was of the Lutheran faith, and her son wrote that she was the anchor of the family and dedicated her life to helping her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband William in 1976. She is survived by her son Robert Kanan of Juneau and four grandchildren, Steve Kanan of Juneau, Brittany Parfitt of Seattle, and Brad and Marc Parfitt of Juneau. She is also survived by six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
Robert Conroy Green
Longtime Alaska resident Robert Conroy Greene died of cancer in Spokane, Wash., on Dec. 14, 2000. He would have celebrated his 69th birthday the following day.
Born, educated and married in Superior, Wis., Greene brought his family to Alaska in 1963. He worked as a teacher, principal and superintendent of schools on the Kenai Peninsula and in Kodiak, and retired from the Association of Alaska School Boards as their executive director in 1988.
Greene is survived by his wife of 43 years, Josephine, and his children: Patti, of Anchorage; Michael, of Juneau; and Mary, of Juneau; and by his three grandchildren, Samantha Greene, and Travis and Emma Leigh Greene-Bohleber.
At Greene's request, no memorial or funeral service will be held. Instead, donations may be made to a food bank, favorite charity, or local shelter. The Greene family can be contacted at 11827 North Nine Mile Road, Nine Mile Falls, WA, 99026, c/o Charles Calkins.
