Last year the total snowfall at the Juneau Airport as of Dec. 26 was 2.3 inches. This December, it is 18.5 inches, according to Dan Byrd of the National Weather Service.
The difference is even greater at the agency's office on Back Loop Road, where the weather is a little colder than at the airport. Last year, the office had 3/10ths of an inch of snow by Dec. 26. This year, it was 37.3 inches, Byrd said.
However, temperatures rising to the low 40s and warm, gusting winds over the past few days have melted most of the snow, causing the tubing hill at Eaglecrest Ski Area to be shut down on Christmas Day because of "high tide" and leaving puddles of water on the downhill runs.
