JUNEAU - The Juneau Lyric Opera will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a Mid-Winter Vocal Festival held Jan. 2-9 at Chapel by the Lake.
The festival will feature a performance by guest artists Dr. Byron McGilvray and Janis Capelle at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9. The Festival Chorus and selected soloists also will perform.
A group voice three-day workshop will be held 5:30-6:45 p.m. Jan. 2, 5 and 7. The class will include voice instruction in the basic techniques of good tone production, breath support and musical sense. Cost is $35.
A seven-day festival chorus workshop will be 7-9:30 p.m. Jan. 2, 10 a.m.-noon Jan. 3, 2-4 p.m. Jan. 4, and 7-9:30 p.m. Jan. 5-8, culminating in a performance at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 9. The chorus will practice basic and advanced choral singing techniques while singing some of the world's best choral music. Repertoire will range from Baroque to Broadway. Cost is $60.
A four-day master class will be held noon-2 p.m. Jan. 3, 4-6 p.m. Jan. 4 and 5:30-6:45 p.m. Jan. 6 and 8. Singers are offered the opportunity to sing for each other and to be critiqued by both McGilvray, Capelle and the class, in order to improve vocal technique and interpretation. Singers need to come to class with at least one prepared piece and with several copies of the music. The master class is not just for solo voices duets; trios, quartets and ensembles are welcome. Cost is $35.
McGilvray and Capelle also will offer private, half-hour lessons at $30 per half-hour. Lessons should be scheduled in advance, and payment will be made to McGilvray or Capelle at the lesson. Call 789-4604 to make an appointment.
