JUNEAU - Discovery Southeast and Eaglecrest Ski Area will host the winter celebration, Discovery Days, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at Eaglecrest Ski Area. Future Discovery Days also will be on Feb. 16 and March 27.
Discovery Days, designed to celebrate the winter environment on the mountain through outdoor activities and science-based investigations, will include a variety of events: a snowshoeing adventure for kids age 10-12 from 10 a.m. to noon; a talk by Beth Weigel, executive director for Discovery Southeast, titled "Discovering the Mountain Environment," at noon in the lodge; and, also for kids ages 10-12, an exploration of the lower mountain on skis from 1 to 3 p.m.
The day will end with a nature ski movie featuring the Snow Monsters for kids of all ages at 2:30 p.m. in the lodge. Participants can visit Discovery Day stations on the mountain with a guide to learn more about terrain, wildlife, snow and wind.
Space is limited for outdoor activities, and weather-appropriate clothing is necessary. Snow shoes will be provided, but participants will need their own alpine skis or rentals from Eaglecrest. For promotions on the mountain or in the rental shop, contact Eaglecrest. Kids participating in the ski adventure should be able to confidently ski the lower mountain from the Hooter chairlift.
Call 463-1500 to register. All activities are free for Discovery Southeast members and a small donation for nonmembers. Visit www.discoverysoutheast.org for more information.
