U.S. should build friendship, not a wall

I am writing in response to an article I read in the San Diego Union Tribune, "El Salvador's rescue of Hungarian Jews," dated Dec. 20. The article was about the government of El Salvador saving the lives of more than 40,000 Hungarian Jews from been killed by Hitler's evil forces in 1944.

Sound off on the important issues at

"Working through its consular office in Geneva, Switzerland, the Salvadoran government came up with a creative plan. It decided to issue Salvadoran citizenship papers to Hungarian Jews who would otherwise have been sent to Nazi death camps."

I would call this a heroic gesture from El Salvador, then a poor country and still a poor country today. However, here in the United States, the richest country in the world, we fight by building a double cement border when we should seek more allies and be friendly to our Mexican neighbors.

Mexico has many people here. Whether legal or illegal, all are working residents of this great nation. We also should remember that the West was part of Mexico before the Mexican-American War.

We should forget the past and concentrate on the future. The Department of Homeland Security should not be worried about a few Mexicans crossing the border illegally, but should worry more about the terrorists that attacked us on Sept. 11.

If we spend $547 billion in the Iraq war, why not spend more money to legalize all the illegal aliens in this country and open the borders for free trade and get oil from Mexico and Canada instead of the Middle East? Now is the time to stop being racist and unite with our Mexican neighbors to become brothers and sisters instead of enemies.

I feel that if we become partners with Mexico and open the borders, we will probably eliminate many problems and save money in the long run. I am sure that we do not need all those border patrol agents working and arresting people for nothing.

We are wasting our tax dollars on something that is not a problem. Our problem is the war in Iraq and our American innocent young soldiers that are getting killed. Let us unite like Europe, with open borders and the euro. Maybe we should just have a U.S.-Mexican dollar to solve the issues of the value of our American dollar.
