JUNEAU - Juneau Youth Sailing is seeking people to join its board of directors. The group was founded more than a decade ago by a board of 10 committed individuals who all put much time and effort into the program's operation and management.
"The trouble with sailors, though, is that they have a tendency to sail away," said 2008-2009 JYS President Carl Brodersen. "We've been getting along on at five for a while, but owing to an upcoming and very well-deserved respite, we currently have only three confirmed board members for the 2010 season."
Board meetings are quasi-seasonal and rarely occur more than twice a month.
"We need folks who can work with the current board members to get scrolled up on typical JYS tasks, and then take over responsibility for some of said tasks for a few months during the season," Brodersen said. "If you want to volunteer yourself, or someone else (like an unsuspecting spouse who owes you one), please get in contact with us."
A few JYS tasks, some of which are addressed through parent work groups, but still need someone to keep track, include accounting, instructor payroll; instructor organization, scheduling and wrangling; boat maintenance; engine maintenance; drysuit repairs; management of class sign-ups; first-day packet preparation for instructors; hounding of parents for medical and other release forms; fielding parent questions as they sign up for classes; grant writing; organizing other fundraisers and more.
