FAIRBANKS - A new, $4 million medical center has opened in McGrath.

The Fairbanks Daily News says the medical center was built to serve the estimated 600 residents of the Upper Kuskokwim Valley.

Southcentral Foundation spokeswoman Allison Knox says the clinic will serve the villages of McGrath, Medfra, Nikolai, Takotna and Telida.

The Tanana Chiefs Conference transferred responsibility for health clinics in McGrath, Nikolai and Tokatna to the Southcentral Foundation six years ago at the request of tribes and municipal governments.

The Southcentral Foundation manages more than 60 health care programs and services in Alaska.
