Former Juneau resident Rena Baty, 62, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at Saxt Hit SEARHC Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka.
She was born Dec. 21, 1942, in Juneau, to Fausto Mamburam and Clara Martha (Kinch) Paulo. Her Tlingit name is Kaa Jinna (The Measure of Copper in a Man's Hand), of Yeil (Raven) moiety, KwaashK'iKwaan (Humpback Salmon) clan, Dis Hit (Moon House) Yakutat. Her mother was born in Douglas and her father was born in Numancia Capiz, Aklan, Philippines. She was raised in Juneau and attended Juneau-Douglas High School.
On June 9, 1961, she married Byron F. Baty at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Juneau. After many years of traveling with the U.S. Coast Guard, she and her family made Sitka their home in August of 1980.
She was involved in community and tribal politics. She helped with her children's activities and operated the family's business, "New Tlingit Traditions."
In her leisure time she enjoyed beading and sewing native regalia for family and friends. She collected cookie jars and antiques. She was also an avid reader, a tireless traveler and a shopper for her grandchildren and family, as well as the family photographer and historian.
Her family said, "Rena was a consummate storyteller, jokester and enjoyed teasing the listener. She was a tireless advocate of higher education, often saying, 'learning is important no matter how hard the journey.' In her death, she taught us to live."
Survivors include her husband, Byron F. Baty Sr.; daughters, Elizabeth Baty (Janet Sailer) of North Bend, Wash., and Keri Paulo of Sitka; sons, Byron F. Baty Jr. of Shelton, Wash., Robert Baty (Ramona) of Wasilla, and Christopher Baty of Kirkland, Wash.; aunt, Lucille Carrillo of Juneau; brothers, Fausto Paulo of Juneau, Dann (Martha) Paulo of Amesbury, Mass., Robert Paulo of Juneau, William Paulo (Angela Edwards) of Juneau, Peter (Sabrina) Paulo of Anchorage, Dennis Krejci of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., and Rick Paulo of Juneau; sisters, Arlinda (Pete) Miller of Juneau, Roberta Hays (Orrie Shepson) of Renton, Wash., and Tina Paulo of Gresham, Ore.; grandchildren, KaJena and Justin Baty of Wasilla; Nelli Lord, Lena Farcas, Lowell Petersen and Ray Sensmeir and their families of Yakutat; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A celebration of her life will be held at 12 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 28, at the Sheet'Ka Kwaan Naa Kahidi, Sitka Village Community House, 200 Katlian Street in Sitka. Friends are invited to share memories and sign the family's guestbook at http://www.flintofts.com.
