SITKA - Are you tired of weight-loss diets that don't work? Are you a woman who wants to learn about a fun, effective way to improve your health and wellness, without being a slave to the scale? Then the WISE At Every Size program may be for you.

The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium WISEWOMAN program will host a community presentation about WISE At Every Size from 6-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Harrigan Centennial Hall. This presentation will introduce the WISE At Every Size program, and it will allow women from Sitka to register for the series of free classes that start later in January.

WISE At Every Size is a non-dieting approach to health and wellness. The classes are open to all adult women and they focus on listening to your body's messages of hunger and fullness, finding ways to get joyful movement and having a positive body image. Research has shown that this approach can reduce blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose readings, while improving overall fitness. Women who complete the program requirements will earn a $50 gift certificate.

Almost 100 women in Southeast Alaska have completed the WISE At Every Size program since the first round of classes started in January 2008. One of those was Sharon McIndoo of Sitka and Angoon, who said WISE At Every Size "is a great program. It taught me about intuitive eating, and that every 'body' has different fitness levels, no matter what we look like on the outside. I learned to get joyful movement into my daily routine and I enjoy being a role model."

In addition to the classes in Sitka, there will be WISE At Every Size classes taught this winter in several other Southeast communities.
