We at Aiding Women in Abuse and Rape Emergencies Inc. (AWARE) know Alaskan Brewing Co. to be a stellar group with a reputation for leadership in caring for their staff and workplace - the future of our natural environment and the quality of their award winning beer.
The success of the company is evident in friendly principled employees, and we felt a kinship in this, our responsible work environment and values. So we were especially honored to have been chosen by the Alaskan Brew crew to receive a donation of all their tips accumulated in 2008. For the entire year, a sign was posted describing the work of AWARE Inc. in the Alaskan Brewing Co. gift shop and tasting bar.
Communications Director (and AWARE volunteer) Ashley Johnston told us, "Nancy Woizeschke, David Troup and Tony Hand make up our year-round gift shop team whose big smiles and warm hearts played a big hand in collecting the record amount of tips at our tasting bar." She added that the cause (of assisting AWARE in serving survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault) inspired people in a very rainy tourist season to be especially generous.
I can still feel the moment as I stood before the Alaska Brewing Company staff to receive their tip money, and Nancy handed me the check - for $10,000! Anyone who runs a non-profit knows that it's a rare day you are handed a check for $10,000, no grant application and no spending reports required, simply because a group of people appreciate your work in the community, because a group of people care about the women and children in their community who have been subjected to abuse and violence, a group of people take responsibility to do their part to ameliorate the victimization of innocent people.
There is a Yiddish saying, "When the heart is full, the eyes overflow," and this was my experience in the moment.
It is difficult to find the words to thank the hardworking staff of Alaskan Brewing Company knowing what it means to them to give this generous gift and also what it means to the AWARE staff and volunteers to receive it.
Each year thousands of women, men and children in Juneau and northern Southeast communities receive essential AWARE services: crisis intervention, referral and information, advocacy and support, counseling, training and educating, and prevention and safety planning information. Thank you Alaskan Brewing Company for your model community leadership, and for your heartfelt and financial endorsements of our efforts to create a safe and empowering environment for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. On behalf of our Board of Directors, our staff and volunteers, and on behalf of the most courageous people we know - the women and children who walk through our door for services, we thank you - Marcy, Geoff, Nancy, David, Tony, Tracy and the entire Brew Crew. We are deeply grateful for your support. Your generosity to AWARE, this year and last, will never be forgotten.
