University of Missouri dropping 16 degree offerings

Posted: Tuesday, December 28, 2010

COLUMBIA, Mo. - A state-mandated review of academic programs has led to a University of Missouri plan to eliminate 16 degree options in coming years.

Chancellor Brady Deaton says most of that will come through merging programs that will create new degrees.

The state in October ordered all public universities to review programs that award an average of fewer than 10 bachelor's, five master's and three doctoral programs a year.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that the state's Coordinating Board of Higher Education will review the proposal in February.

Deputy Provost Ken Dean says it might take years to change some of the degree programs to accommodate students already enrolled in them.

He says the university has eliminated as many degrees as it has created over the past decade.
