Images from another time: Sinking of the Prinsendam, 1980

Posted: Thursday, December 29, 2005

A lifeboat hangs from the luxury liner Prinsendam as it drifts abandoned in the Gulf of Alaska in October 1980. The 427-foot-long cruise liner caught fire on the night of Oct. 4, 120 miles south of Yakutat. The fire grew out of control and the captain ordered the ship to be abandoned. All 520 passengers and crewmen were saved. Seven days later, the Prinsendam capsized and sunk.
