Juneau doing something new with sludge

Posted: Wednesday, December 29, 2010

JUNEAU - The city of Juneau is trying something new to dispose of sludge from the Mendenhall Treatment Center.

The sludge can't be burned in the treatment plant incinerator because it is broken. So, the sludge is being dumped at the Juneau landfill.

City Manager Rod Swope says the sludge has been pressed, water removed and is very safe and sanitary. However, residents in the area of the landfill say they have noticed a stronger odor.

The city and borough has a six-month agreement with Waste Management to deal with the sludge.
