JUNEAU - Eaglecrest Ski Area had back-to-back days of record-breaking business this weekend, despite the national recession and a higher number of season pass holders compared to last year.
"We talk about it as a discretionary sport, but in Juneau it's almost mandatory. For mental health, if you will," General Manager Kirk Duncan said.
The previous record for single-day revenue was set Jan. 6, 2006, when the ski area brought in $22,000, Duncan said. That record was crushed Friday and again Saturday by 17 and 19 percent, respectively. The new record is more than $26,000.
Sunday brought in another $23,000. The ski area is open every day until Jan. 5 and then will return to its regular schedule of Thursdays thru Mondays.
Duncan said snow downtown always helps and guessed that a four-year marketing campaign may finally be catching on.
