Firefighters find marijuana at home

ANCHORAGE - Police say a fire at an Anchorage apartment led to the discovery of dozens of marijuana plants.

Firefighters found more than 50 plants at the Reka Drive residence Saturday night.

No one was home at the time, but a resident in the apartment building called 911 to report smoke.

Police spokeswoman Anita Shell said that when firefighters arrived, they found the apartment empty and something burning on the stove.

Firefighters initially found 25 marijuana plants. After putting out the fire, they found the other plants in a bathroom that had been converted into a hothouse.

Shell says that when the occupants - a couple in their 50s - returned, police were waiting for them, but the residents did not want to talk.

Police have forwarded the matter to the district attorney's office.
