All banks, schools, the University of Alaska Southeast, the court system, state offices, federal offices and borough offices will be closed Monday in celebration of the New Year's Day holiday.
Capital Transit will follow regular bus service schedule today, but there will be no service Monday.
Some businesses are also closing early this afternoon or evening to allow employees to celebrate New Year's Eve before midnight when the year 2001 begins.
Both locations of the Breeze-In will be open from 7 a.m. to midnight on New Year's Day.
Alaskan and Proud market will close at 8 p.m. this evening and be open regular hours on New Year's Day.
Carrs Quality Center will be open regular hours on New Year's Day. However, Carrs' pharmacy will be closed.
Super Bear supermarket will close at 9 p.m. this evening and will be open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on New Year's Day.
The Nugget Mall will be open from noon to 5 p.m. today and closed Monday.
Among downtown stores, Galligaskins and Hearthside Books will be closed Monday.
The pharmacy at Fred Meyer will close at 5 p.m. today and will not be open Monday.
The Fiddlehead Restaurant, El Sombrero, Armadillo Tex-Mex Cafe and T.K. Maguire's restaurant will be closed New Year's Day. However, the Breakwater, Vito 'N Nick's, Tabby's, Bullwinkle's and The Hangar will be among those restaurants open.
Because New Year's Day falls on a Monday, collection by Arrow Refuse/Capitol Disposal will be delayed one day. That is, customers whose garbage is usually picked up on Monday should put it out for collection by 7 a.m. Tuesday. The landfill will be closed Jan. 1.
Empire offices will be closed Monday and no paper will be published. Offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The circulation department is open from 7 to 10 a.m. today at 586-3740.
