Holiday Cup 2003 indoor soccer tournament - The 11th annual indoor soccer tournament takes place from Dec. 20 through Dec. 31, with six coed divisions - Elementary (grades 4-5), Middle School A and B (grades 6-8), Junior (high school, ages 16-younger), Senior (high school-college, ages 17-21) and Masters (ages 22-222). Games are held at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School and Mendenhall River Community School. Championships will be held on Dec. 31 from 1 p.m. to about 8:30 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School.

Eaglecrest Ski Area Snowflake Festival - Events run though Jan. 4, and participants age 19-older can enter to win a ski package for two to Alyeska Resort, a round-trip ticket for two on Wings of Alaska or a five-day booklet of lift tickets. Juneau Adult Hockey Association women's and coed hockey registration - The last day to register for the winter season is Monday, Jan. 5, 2004. The winter season starts Jan. 12 and teams play one game a week through mid-April at Treadwell Arena. The registration fee is $125 (players new to JAHA) and $85 (players who competed in the fall 2003 season). The women's league is limited to 90 women, no late registration. Spots also are open in the coed leagues, which are open to all players age 18-older. Arctic Winter Games-Team Alaska table tennis tryouts - The tryouts take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Fairview Recreation Center in Anchorage (1121 East 10th Ave.). There is a tryout fee of $25 per person, and the team will be eight individuals (two boys, two girls from each age group). The age groups are Junior (born 1986-later) and Juvenile (born 1989-later). Water safety instructor aide course - This class takes place from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays from Jan. 10 through Feb. 21. The course is designed for mature swimmers age 10 and older who have completed at least Level IV of the American Red Cross' Learn to Swim Program. HoopTime Basketball registration: HoopTime Basketball, a non-profit AAU-sanctioned club, is accepting registrations for the 2004 season for boys and girls in grades 4-8. Juneau Golf Club's Alaskan Open 2004 - Registration is due by Jan. 15, 2004, at the Juneau Golf Club for this annual event that takes place March 1-5 in Casa Grande, Ariz. No late registration will be accepted, except to fill last-minute cancelations. The week's events include a four-person team best-ball tournament, a one-putt competition, golf clinics and group dinners. Mount Jumbo Gym preschool open gym - This Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation program is open from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 909 Fourth Street in Douglas for children ages 1-6 and their parents or caregivers. A ratio of four children to one adult must be met. Balls, mats, trikes, scooters, large building blocks, parachutes and a Little Tykes climber system will be available for use. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 3-7 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and 3-9 p.m. on Fridays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Treadwell Arena programs - The ice arena is open seven days a week with a variety of public open skates, youth open skates, pond hockey and rental times available (see Treadwell Arena Web site for details). The rink is closed for ice maintenance from 7:45-10:45 a.m. on Mondays and from 7:45 a.m. to noon on Fridays. Fees for open skates are $4 adults, $3 youths (age 17-younger) and $2 seniors (age 65-older). Fees for pond hockey are $5 adults, $4 youths and $3 seniors. Skate rental is $2 for adults and youths, and $1.90 for seniors. Passes are available for open skates, pond hockey and skate rental. Facility rental is $150 an hour. Juneau 4-H Cross-Country Ski Club - The first Juneau 4-H Cross-Country Ski Club ski session takes place on Jan. 4, 2004, with regular ski sessions from 1-3 p.m. on Sundays through March 7, 2004, at various locations around Juneau. The club is run by Odin Brudie and Frankie Pillifant and is open for students in grades K-12, but parents are encouraged to ski with their children. Ski equipment is available for rent, but people renting equipment must participate in most of the club's events. A 4-H membership fee of $6 (good all year for all 4-H clubs) will be charged, and ski equipment can be rented for the season for $50 (with $20 refunded if you participate in seven 4-H ski days, scholarships available based on need). Eaglecrest Ski Area nordic ski lessons - Nordic ski lessons are available through the Eaglecrest Ski and Snowboard School. A 2-hour learn-to-classic-ski lesson or a learn-to-skate-ski lesson costs $17 each, while 2-hour intermediate and advanced clinics cost $20. Learn-to-Telemark-ski lessons are $17 and include and all-day surface lift ticket, while 2-hour intermediate and advanced classes cost $20. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
