Lyric Opera gears up for Mid-Winter Festival

JUNEAU - The Juneau Lyric Opera's Mid-Winter Vocal Festival will run Jan. 4 to Jan. 10 this year. Byron McGilvray, the director of choral and vocal music at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, is returning as guest conductor.

The chorus will sing choral pieces ranging from baroque to Broadway, with rehearsals Jan. 4 to Jan. 9 and a performance at St. Paul's Catholic Church at 8 p.m., Jan. 10.

The workshop costs $55 per person. McGilvray also will offer private and group voice lessons. Information available at

Eaglecrest to usher in year with fireworks

JUNEAU - Eaglecrest Ski Area will present its annual fireworks display, from the top of the giant slalom course on the mountain, at 4:30 p.m. on New Year's Day.

Festivities begin at 3 p.m. in the day lodge with aprés ski munchies and live music by Urbana Desert.
