A community, sans Wal-Mart

Letter to the editor

Here's what I want for Juneau: I want fair wages. I want stores downtown that sell something other than diamonds and T-shirts. I want affordable housing and responsible landlords. I want the empty burned-out lot on Front Street to be turned into an Olympic-sized swimming pool. I want an all-night diner with grumpy waitresses and bad coffee. I want Marine Park to be the way it used to be. I want Charles Bronson to come back from the dead and be our mayor (unless he was a Republican). I want our city to care more about our own people and less about tourists.

I especially want Wal-Mart to keep its slave-wage, sweatshop, globalization-hungry, greed-dripping hands out of our town. They will leave as soon as business fails. Because they don't care about any community or even know the meaning of the word.
