When writing a cover letter, be sure to confirm the proper gender, spelling, title and company name of the individual you are sending it to. According to Robbie Miller Kaplan, author of "How To Say It In Your Job Search," (Prentice Hall Press 2004; $16.00) it's best to use a contemporary approach. "Address letters to Gentlemen or Madam if you're unable to locate a name," says Kaplan. "Also, avoid using incorrect courtesy titles - if you can't figure out the gender, try Dear Leslie Smith, for example."
