Treat same-sex partners equally

One step forward and two steps back. Equality is a sticky issue in this country, and I find it appalling that the newly elected governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, is unwilling to support same-sex benefits for citizens of Alaska.

Sound off on the important issues at

Same-sex partners should be treated no differently than any other person. It wasn't until 1920 that women were allowed to vote, and it took a Civil War, several constitutional amendments and another 100 years of discriminatory actions before minorities had the legal framework to support their struggle. We need to progress as a society.

Same-sex partners should be able to choose benefit packages, designate their retirement funds and have equal protection under the laws. Alaska has one of the best and most progressive state constitutions in the United States, and also has an excellent court system that is willing to go where the discriminatory Republican Party is unwilling.

The Supreme Court of Alaska has spoken, and the governor should listen to the rule of law. It is counterproductive to divide people over issues that should not be contentious. Discrimination is ugly and should not be furthered by a right-wing, conservative agenda. Support same-sex partners.
